Since turning 30, I have gotten to know hangovers all too well. And with that, I know how desperate one can be to find a cure. Annnything to make the day more tolerable. So I got all excited when I heard about chlorella.

While I am usually a little blase about the latest superfood obsessions, this in-vogue algae has totally made its way into my life.

Why is chlorella special? It has the usual promises. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, all-natural, detoxifying, all those phrases that get thrown around so often they are starting to lose their meaning. But also, articles about chlorella keep referring to a Japanese study which apparently showed that it can reduce hangover symptoms by 96% so… there’s that.

It seems that chlorella works some magic on your liver, helping it to clear your body of toxins and gross things extra fast. Crucial when you’re planning to paaaaarrrrtttaaaaaayyyyy ahem, slightly exceed the recommended guidelines for daily alcohol intake.

The very idea of something that can improve my relationship with wine is just too irresistible for me. I bought a big ol’ bag of the powder and ran with it.

Usually chlorella fits into super green detox smoothies which are packed with fruit. Delicious on a normal day, but in the interest of creating a hangover busting smoothie, I avoided this- fruit can just exacerbate the issues of unstable blood sugar and acidic stomach lining that characterize the dreaded hangover.

Also, chlorella can taste a little iffy. It needs to be buried deep, especially if you’re feeling sensitive.

So what we’ve got is a dose of chlorella hidden behind a filling, soothing, carby smoothie that tastes of nothing but chocolate and peanut butter.

The milk or almond milk will help soothe your stomach. Oats and natural peanut butter will give you slow-releasing energy to stabilize your blood sugar. Chlorella will (if we choose to believe and god help me I WANT TO BELIEVE) help your liver perform it’s overtime shift.

The kicker? You should ideally be having this smoothie before and after drinking. I know, I know. The best big, boozy binges are rarely so carefully planned. But in an ideal world, prevention is the best cure and you’d have got your blood sugar stablized, your stomach lined and your liver raring to go before you have that first sip of the fun juice.

Nevertheless, if the damage is already done, this may help to speed up your recovery! Fingers crossed? Maybe?

This smoothie is incredibly filling so when you’re having it the morning after, it may be too much volume. You may wish to share it with someone else. A friend, significant other, roommate, random stranger that woke up in your bathtub. (Even better if you can convince them to make it for you.)

Disclaimer: This smoothie recipe is for fun and good health. Let’s face it- your hangover might be stronger than any trendy superfood. Please don’t hate me if you still feel terrible!

This hangover buster will line your stomach, give you slow-release energy and detox your liver pronto thanks to the addition of chlorella- although you'd never know it was there, thanks to the super chocolatey peanut buttery taste!
